List of Universities in Nigeria that offers Pharmacy

One of the most popular degrees in Nigerian universities is pharmacy because it has so many career options for students and so few universities have been permitted to provide it.

Pharmacy is the science and practice of discovering, producing, preparing, dispensing, reviewing, and monitoring medications.

The goal of pharmacy as a course is to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective use of pharmaceuticals.

It connects health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and natural sciences, making it a diverse field of study. Since pharmaceutical corporations currently produce the majority of the pharmaceuticals, professional practice is shifting toward a more clinical focus.

Pharmacy practice is categorized as either community or institutional, depending on the environment. Because pharmacy is such a profitable field, it stands to reason that everyone wants to enroll in a program with certain career prospects or job security. Both can be found at the pharmacy.

Pharmacy programs aren’t offered by many Nigerian universities, though. As a result, not all universities have pharmacy programs that are accredited.

One must take into cognizance the fact that pharmacy is significantly different from other programs given by Nigerian universities in that you won’t receive the same degree from them after you graduate.

There are two bachelor’s degrees in pharmacy offered right now: they include;

Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm D)

Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree (B Pharm)

One contrasts these two degrees by noting that Pharm D has a greater clinical focus, while B Pharm concentrates more on drug manufacturing and distribution.

In Nigeria, a B Pharm is currently the minimum requirement for practicing as a pharmacist, rather than a Pharm D. Additionally, only around five out of the approximately 25 Nigerian universities that offer Pharmacy provide the Pharm D degree.

This situation is somewhat reasonable since Pharm D programs are costly to run, and not all institutions are willing to include this expense in their budget.

Nevertheless, The competitiveness at those Universities is a drawback of applying to Pharm D programs, however, we shouldn’t have been surprised given there aren’t many universities in Nigeria that provide it.

The necessary JAMB and school departmental cutoff marks one is expected to have is a correct JAMB and O’ level subject combined with a minimum of credits in your core five (5) courses, in order to be eligible to study pharmacy at these universities.

If you must study pharmacy, you must do it full-time by enrolling in a recognized direct admission program, such as JAMB, or by applying for JAMB. P.S.

To be on the safe side, a JAMB score of 280 or more should be sufficient for admission to all institutions, along with excellent performance in your O’levels for screening universities and strong Post UTME scores for Post UTME universities.

Nigerian pharmacy graduates have a variety of employment options, including positions as Certified Pharmacists, Lecturers, Medical Officers, Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives, Healthcare Assistants, and more.
