1. University of Uyo
The University of Uyo located in the state capital, Uyo was originally established as the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS). The university was later recognized as a federal university by the federal government of Nigeria on October 1st, 1991, and renamed “University of Uyo”.
Today, the University of Uyo offers over 100 programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels through its numerous campuses spread across Akwa Ibom State. It is also recognized as one of the best universities in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at large.
2. Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden
Akwa Ibom State University located in Ikot Akpaden was established by the state government in 2010. The first set of students started their academic journey at this university in the 2010/2011 academic year. Today, AKSU as this university is popularly called offers over 100 academic disciplines at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
3. Obong University, Obong Ntak
Obong University is located in Obong Ntak. It is a Church of Christ-affiliated university. It is a four-year private university that was founded in 1997 originally as the African College of Management and later the University of Africa.
The University also maintains a partnership with Obong Christian School which was established in 1986 and sponsored by the congregation of Christians at Mt. Morris, Michigan.
4. Ritman University, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom:
Ritman University, Ikot Ekpene was established in 2015. The university is a private-owned university focused on entrepreneurship.
5. Topfaith University, Mkpatak
Topfaith University located at Mkpatak, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State was established in 2021. This university kickstarted its academic activities with 17 programs in Engineering, Applied Sciences, Law, and Management. Today, Topfaith University offers a wide variety of academic disciplines and holds accreditation from the National Universities Council(NUC).
6. The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA)
The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) was established in June 2021 by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is one of the newest universities established by the Nigerian government. Currently, FUTIA offers courses in sciences and technology and it is one of the few specialized colleges in Nigeria.
