About (GIJ) Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ)
UniMAC-GIJ, once known as the Ghana Institute of Journalism, began on October 16, 1959. It was officially inaugurated by Mr. Kofi Baako, who served as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting at that time. This school was created by the Kwame Nkrumah government to train journalists. Their goal was to have a group of journalists who were patriotic and could help in the progress of Africa.
At first, it was a part of the Accra Technical Institute, which is now known as the Accra Technical University. Mr. Richard McMillan, who was retiring as the Director of British Information Services in Ghana, was the first principal and journalism tutor. In 1966, the school relocated to its current location, which was previously the site of the Ghana Press Club.
Over time, the institute has undergone significant changes and is now a tertiary institution due to certain laws and regulations that were put in place.
